How Does Ketamine Treatment Work?
Ketamine works very differently from traditional antidepressants and medications. While most medications take weeks to build up in your system, ketamine acts quickly—often within hours or days. When you experience severe depression, certain parts of your brain can become "stuck." The connections between brain cells (called synapses) weaken, and your brain struggles to process emotions and recover from negative thought patterns. This is why many people feel trapped in cycles of hopelessness or numbness. Ketamine helps stimulate new connections between brain cells—a process called neuroplasticity. It essentially "reboots" certain brain pathways, giving you the ability to think, feel, and process emotions more clearly again. Many patients describe it as a mental "reset" that helps them move past cycles of depression. It’s not a cure, it’s a powerful tool to regain hope and begin healing.
At a chemical level, ketamine works by interacting with the NMDA receptor, which is part of the brain’s glutamate system—the primary system involved in learning, memory, and the formation of new neural connections.

KETAMINE EXPLAINED
All Your Questions Answered
What is ketamine?
Ketamine therapy is an alternative therapeutic treatment for mental disorders
resistant to traditional therapy and medication. Ketamine has demonstrated
effective, promising results when treating depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, drug
and alcohol addiction, and chronic pain. Ketamine targets the causes of mental
illness for real transformation, instead of only dulling the symptoms. It enables the
mind to heal itself by rewiring malfunctioning neurons, creating new neural
pathways in the brain for true healing.
How does ketamine therapy work?
Ketamine works by blocking NMDA receptors in your brain’s glutamate system, triggering a cascade of changes that promote neuroplasticity—regrowth of neural connections. This can offer rapid relief, often within hours, from conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, and OCD when other treatments have failed.
Who is a good candidate for ketamine therapy?
Ketamine is generally considered for individuals who haven’t responded to at least two standard treatments—such as medications or talk therapy—for depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, or chronic pain. A medical evaluation helps ensure it’s a safe and appropriate option for your unique needs.
What are ketamine therapy side effects?
At clinical doses, patients may experience short-lived side effects like dissociation, visual changes, dizziness, nausea, increased blood pressure, or mild hallucinations. These effects typically resolve within 1–2 hours post-treatment.
How much does ketamine therapy cost?
An initial treatment course usually includes 6–8 sessions and can total $2,400 to over $6,000. We offer physician-guided intramuscular ketamine injections at our clinic for $349 per session. New patients receive an initial 6 treatment course at a discounted rate of $1,745 with our 6-week to 2-month program. Patients typically receive 1 additional treatment every 6 months thereafter. For patients seeking the privacy and comfort of ketamine treatment at home, we can come to you. At home treatments cost $3,000 for the day. Refer a friend and both parties receive a $50 discount.
Does ketamine therapy get you high?
Ketamine may cause mild dissociative or “floaty” sensations, but this is not a recreational high. In a controlled, therapeutic setting, these experiences are part of the healing process and are monitored by medical professionals to ensure safety.
Is ketamine therapy covered by insurance?
Most insurance providers still classify ketamine therapy as experimental and may not cover it. Intramuscular ketamine treatments typically require out-of-pocket payment. Always check with your insurance and our clinic team for details.
